One might feel tad intimidated meeting one of the most widely read lifestyle blogger locally. She is not a stranger to most of the younger generation and thousands log on to read her latest rendezvous, parties, ramblings or just to ogle at the truckloads of pictures daily.

But Joyce Wong turned out to be a very friendly person in the flesh. She has been in the local blogging scene for four years now and till now her writings have been personal. The blog started with college life titbits, funny observations, and interesting happenings and of course parties. Her writings are juiced up with a lot of well edited pictures as well. Just last year she shifted from a premium Xanga account to her very own domain.

“I think it is a compilation of my life, from college to my different jobs. I had no idea how many people read my blog until someone asked me and I casually replied 200. That was the number of people putting in comments. I then learnt all about site visitors, got around to installing a counter and at this point of time I have about 2,500 unique visitors daily,” she said.

One of the reasons why the blog is well read is because she updates constantly and puts up a lot of pictures. It is also easy to read and non political.

“I try to write as often as possible because I would lose my enthusiasm if I don’t. Besides after a week or two, some happenings don’t seem timely anymore. As for pictures I used to spend a few hours each day carefully editing them. Now I just don’t have anymore time,” adding that she enjoys reading her archive because it is filled with attractive pictures.

So what’s the story behind the blog name? Alas, she revealed that there isn’t any interesting story behind her nickname. She adores fairies and has a blue one tattooed on her back. However the titles ‘fairy’ and ‘bluefairy’ were taken so she just simply used kinkybluefairy, never imagining that the nick would grow to be so widely known.

SELF CENSORSHIP
When you are famous (online or offline) and recognizable on the streets, the issue of self censoring will crop up sooner or later.

“About a year ago, I started to self censor because I don’t want people I don’t know to know specific personal details of my life. Also, I don’t want my colleagues, bosses and clients to be reading my inner emo stuff too.”

“Of course where I stay is kept away from the blog but I also don’t want people to know exactly where I’m going sometimes. Because of my red hair I get recognised in public places and contrary to what many people believe, I don’t want that much attention.”

She also has a lot of celebrity friends who advise her how to deal with nosy questions, funny onlookers and negative comments. She admitted that people do go around asking her college friends about her personal life. She gets her fair amount of whispering and finger pointing when people see her on the street.

“In the beginning I was a total blur about these things until they were pointed out to me. Sometimes it is funny because I don’t know if they were commenting about my clothes or just me. I’m such a talkative and open person but friends have been telling me not to reveal myself too much in first meetings,” she shared.

Negative comments often make their way to her inbox but she has learnt to ignore them. Most of these comments criticise and nitpicks on mundane things in her life. She used to be irritated and put off but as she matured as a blogger, it no longer bothers her.

“I also have a private blog for 3 years now and another blog which only my close friends know about. Those blogs allow me to vent and ramble as I like,” she said.

PERKS AND SWAG
A managing editor of Tongue in Chic (www.tonguechic.com), she has been in the media industry since she started working. Perks and swag that are showered onto bloggers these days isn’t new to her.

“The perks are about the same. Invites to events, door gifts and so on. The ad money I get is a decent amount that pays for shopping, occasional travelling and parties,” she said.

It doesn’t mean that the ads are random and indiscriminate. She does screen through the products that come through and believes that advertisers do their own screening as well. Also, she won’t take on assignments to write about something irrelevant to her blog, for example furniture.

Apart from the blog, she does a whole lot of other stuff. She does freelance photography where she handpicks the projects and more recently, something known as Cat Got Your Tongue.

“It is an event held in a club where people can skip the cover charge when they RSVP via Facebook. I usually get to pick the playlists and it is mostly happy chirpy songs. We always have a theme, play games and give away toys too.”

Although this fairy has toned down her partying ways, her writing and photos are still refreshing and interesting to read when political news gets too much. There’s no way you will get the blues at this blog.
